The rise of AI data centres has changed how we think about computing performance and infrastructure design. AI workloads rely heavily on high-performance computing, particularly GPU-intensive tasks. As a result, the demand on data centre cooling systems has increased significantly. This change is prompting companies and data centre operators to reconsider traditional cooling methods and adopt new, energy-efficient cooling techniques.

The AI Impact on Data Centre Cooling

AI models require a lot of processing power, particularly from GPUs. Compared to conventional CPUs, these GPUs generate a lot more heat. Heat management gets more difficult as the number of devices increases. In hyperscale data centres, where thousands of servers operate simultaneously to deliver AI-driven insights on a massive scale, this problem is even more apparent.

In this setting, maintaining hardware performance is not the only goal of efficient cooling for GPUs. Enhancing energy efficiency, decreasing downtime, and preserving performance are also important. Additionally, it is essential for reducing operating expenses and promoting worldwide sustainability initiatives.

Air Cooling vs Liquid Cooling: An Integral Shift

For the majority of data centres, air cooling has historically been the primary technique. While it is cost-effective and easy to set up, its limitations are becoming clear in AI-focused environments. As server densities increase, air cooling systems find it hard to manage the concentrated heat, often causing inefficiencies and greater energy usage.

In contrast, liquid cooling, particularly through direct-to-chip or cold plate methods, has become a better option. Liquid has much higher thermal conductivity than air, which allows for faster and more effective heat removal. This not only supports higher density setups but also leads to better performance consistency.

When it comes to AI deployment, understanding the differences between air cooling and liquid cooling is the key to planning a long-term AI infrastructure strategy.

Immersion Cooling: Powering the AI Infrastructure Shift

Immersion cooling is among the most cutting-edge advancements in data centre cooling. This method involves submerging servers and electronic components in a thermally conductive dielectric liquid. Heat from the hardware is directly absorbed by the liquid. It does away with the need for air-based heat dissipation or conventional heat sinks.

What makes immersion cooling appealing in data centre environments is its efficiency. It significantly lowers the need for fans and air conditioning. This often leads to energy-efficient cooling performance that supports higher server densities and greater compute loads, which is ideal for AI data centres and hyperscale data centres running GPU-intensive applications.

Liquid Cooling at Scale: Direct-to-Chip Solution

Another popular technique in the larger field of liquid cooling is direct-to-chip liquid cooling. This method uses liquid coolant that passes through pipes or plates that are placed directly on CPUs and GPUs, which are high-heat components.

This method allows for precise GPU cooling, which is crucial in AI and deep learning environments. Consistent thermal conditions lead to reliable performance. By lowering the thermal resistance between the heat source and the coolant, these systems can manage much higher densities than traditional air-cooling methods.

Phase Change Cooling: Effective and Accurate

Phase change cooling is another innovative technique that shows promise. This process makes use of phase change materials (PCMs), which store and release thermal energy when they change states, usually from a solid to a liquid and back again. These substances are perfect for targeted thermal management because they absorb heat without causing a noticeable rise in temperature.

In remote areas or edge computing scenarios where conventional HVAC systems are impractical, phase change cooling is especially advantageous. Additionally, it is gaining popularity in micro data centre settings and for AI infrastructure that needs localized cooling without consuming a lot of energy.

Designing the Green Data Centre in an AI Landscape

The conversation today isn’t just about performance. It’s about the planet. Organisations face growing pressure to adopt eco-friendly cooling systems that support broader ESG goals. Green data centre cooling is not just a trendy term. It marks an important shift towards technologies that reduce water use, improve energy consumption, and decrease overall environmental impact.  With reducing carbon footprints becoming a key measure for many businesses, selecting the right cooling system is now a strategic choice.

Additionally, colocation data centre services heavily rely on new cooling technologies. As businesses increasingly turn to colocation centres for flexibility and scalability, they depend on the provider’s ability to offer energy-efficient cooling while supporting high-density AI workloads.

As AI continues to evolve, the infrastructure that supports it must change too. Cooling is not just a support system. It is a key factor in driving innovation, performance, and sustainability.

The future lies in AI data centres that focus on improved cooling systems, which adjust to load, reduce waste, and provide the reliable performance necessary for building a business. Global data centre providers like STT GDC India are essential in this area. As a leader in colocation data centre services, STT GDC India understands the important connection between AI infrastructure and sustainability.

Their modern data centres utilise a full range of cooling solutions, including in-row cooling, rear door heat exchangers (RDHX), liquid immersion cooling, and direct-to-chip liquid cooling. These systems are evolving to manage higher densities, increased compute loads, and more dynamic workloads with ease.
