Yellowed, stained or dull teeth ? professional teeth whitening can help restore natural color and brightness of your teeth.
What is professional teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental treatment designed to restore the natural color of teeth altered by various factors.
Professional teeth whitening is carried out by specialized dentists and hygienists, who use appropriate equipment and specific hydrogen peroxide-based products to remove the pigments deposited in tooth enamel and dentin and responsible for tooth discoloration.
The only useful solution for removing pigments and their effects on teeth is the oxygen that develops during professional hydrogen peroxide treatments.
Teeth whitening should not be confused with professional teeth cleaning, and is not a substitute for it. Indeed, good outpatient oral hygiene should always precede professional teeth whitening.
In turn, although it can contribute to brighter, healthier teeth, professional scaling is no substitute for teeth-whitening operations.
There are several DIY solutions on the market for removing or masking surface stains (abrasive toothpastes, whitening pens, at-home teeth whitening kits, etc.), but professional dentists and hygienists advise against relying exclusively on these solutions.
In fact, they only act temporarily on the outer surface of the teeth, without helping to eliminate the deeper pigments that cause yellow teeth.
What’s more, if misused, these instruments can cause permanent damage to teeth.
Indeed, abuse or misuse of hydrogen peroxide can have negative effects on the surface morphology of teeth, and on the integrity of enamel and dentin.

Why do teeth stain?
Tooth discoloration is mainly related to personal habits and lifestyle.
Over time, teeth absorb color pigments from a variety of sources:
- food
- beverages
- mouthwash;
- drugs;
- smoke.
Color pigments are deposited in the hard dental tissues (enamel and dentin) and alter the natural color of teeth, causing them to yellow and/or darken progressively.
Types of professional teeth whitening: LED and laser whitening
Once the dentist or hygienist has checked that the mouth is in good health and the oral cavity has been properly cleaned, he or she proceeds with the chairside treatment.
Teeth whitening involves applying a hydrogen peroxide-based gel whitening product to the teeth.
Thanks to a photoactivating light source (special LED lamps or laser devices), the whitening product releases oxygen. Absorbed by enamel and dentin, the oxygen molecules break down the pigment molecules responsible for tooth discoloration.
The light energy (photons) developed by LED or laser tooth whitening does not generate heat, thus avoiding dehydration of the teeth and the resulting tooth sensitivity.
Teeth whitening with LED or laser light takes place in a few clinic sessions and is combined with a home treatment involving the use of dental masks for 2 or 3 consecutive nights.
The trays contain the same whitening principle as the in-office treatment, but contain a smaller amount of hydrogen peroxide.
As the days go by, the color of the teeth gradually changes, until the desired shade of white is achieved, as planned with the dentist or hygienist.
How much does tooth whitening cost?
In addition to the treatment itself, teeth whitening involves a series of preliminary assessments and all associated dental care that must be weighed up and planned by the dentist or hygienist.
